The Making of a Custom Shell Artwork for The Ritz-Carlton

There are moments in my career as an artist that feel both surreal and deeply gratifying. One of those moments came when I was commissioned to create a piece for the

Ritz-Carlton hotel on Amelia Island, Florida.

To have my work displayed in such a prestigious location is an honor I never quite imagined.

The artwork is a 48"x48" piece and it will soon be hanging in the Salt restaurant.

The opportunity to contribute something meaningful to a space where people will gather, dine, and create memories is something I don’t take lightly.

The Process

It all started when Soho Art Consulting reached out to me. After a few emails, a phone call, and reviewing my portfolio, they decided to commission a piece based on one of my existing works, Faded. It was exciting to see this project come together from the very beginning.

Next, I created a sample of the chosen artwork to send to the designer. This part of the process ensures that the fabric choice and shell colors fit perfectly with the overall vision. After a bit of back-and-forth, we got everything approved, and I was ready to start.

Ellie at Scrub House Designs built a custom cradled board and oak frame specifically for this project.

In the Studio

Creating a piece like this is a slow, deliberate process. Each shell is carefully sorted by size and color before being arranged to flow organically, forming a circular pattern. There’s something meditative about the process—focusing on the details and watching the design slowly take shape.

The inspiration for the original artwork came from a sunset on the beach. The darker shells represent the sun as it sets, while the beige shells capture the soft reflection of the sunset on the ocean.

I arranged the shells on the board and sent over a loose layout for approval. This step ensures that the design team could visualize the final product before I started permanently gluing the shells into place.

With everything approved, I completed the artwork, carefully arranging and securing each shell to bring the piece to life.

Finally, the artwork was picked up by a local fine art shipper and is now on its way to

The Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island.

A "Pinch me" Moment

I still can’t believe I’m writing this! Having my work featured in The Ritz-Carlton is a milestone I’m incredibly proud of. I’m excited to see the final installation and how the artwork enhances the luxurious ambiance of the space it will live in.

Huge thanks to Soho Art Consulting for curating my work for this incredible public project.
